LAS VEGAS, October 4, 2022--- Lexicon Bank announces Spread the Word Nevada (STWN) as its October Community Spotlight. The Bank will raise funds for their Books & Buddies program, donating books and driving advocacy for their literacy programs that benefit students across Southern Nevada. 

The Bank teamed up with the National Association of Women-Owned Businesses (NAWBO) on Monday, October 3rd to host a National Women’s Small Business Month mixer for the second year in a row at Lexicon Bank in Tivoli Village. All proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to STWN, and guests were encouraged to bring a book with them in exchange for a raffle ticket. By the end of the night, Lexicon Bank proudly collected children’s books to be donated to the organization.

Spread the Word Nevada is the state’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit, distributing over 60,000 books a month to children in underserved neighborhoods. Spread the Word Nevada has distributed more than 6.7 million free books to over 730,000 children in need since its inception in 2001. The organization is thrilled to help propel this important cause forward and get books into the hands and homes of children attending schools in underserved neighborhoods. 

The Books & Buddies mentorship program was developed to improve the reading and comprehension skills of children in need by partnering them with volunteer mentors. These mentors provide their “buddies” with weekly individualized attention to enhance their literacy skills, which are often absent from the child’s home. Schools with a Books & Buddies center have a dedicated Spread the Word Nevada staff member who resides in a specific classroom at the school year-round. These facilitators work with the school's administration and teachers to pair struggling readers with the mentor that fits them best. In March, Lexicon Bank sponsored Spread The Word Nevada’s annual Storybook Gala at Resorts World in Las Vegas. This was the 19th year that the gala was held, breaking Storybook Gala records by having over 600 people in attendance for “The Wizard of Oz” themed event. Each year, this gala is held to raise money for supplying books and reading materials to at-risk children across Nevada while simultaneously encouraging the children to find the joys in reading.
