LAS VEGAS, November 17, 2020 — This month, Lexicon Bank proudly partners with Three Square Food Bank to support families and individuals facing food insecurity across Southern Nevada. As its  November Community Spotlight, Lexicon Bank has donated a total of 7,500 meals and will volunteer at a distribution site to pack groceries for Three Square clients to take home. 

Lexicon Bank’s commitment to giving back to the Las Vegas community is not only through volunteerism, but through leadership too. Lexicon Bank Board Member, Diana Bennett, has been actively involved with Three Square since its inception in 2007, serving as board chair, volunteer, donor and lead organizer of Fashion for Three Square, an annual event that has contributed over $10 million to childhood nutrition programs.

Three Square Food Bank’s mission is to provide wholesome food to hungry people, while passionately pursuing a hunger-free community. They combine food banking (warehousing canned and boxed goods), food rescue (obtaining surplus or unused meats, bread, dairy and produce from hospitality and grocery outlets) and ready-to-eat meals to be the most complete food solution for Southern Nevada. With the help of an extensive network of volunteers across Lincoln, Nye, Esmeralda and Clark Counties, Three Square is able to reach struggling individuals and families at risk of hunger. In 2019, they distributed more than 41 million meals, the equivalent of more than 50 million pounds of food and grocery products, thanks to the generous support of their community partners.

A recent report by Feeding America concludes that in Clark County, the rates grew from 12.8 percent in 2018 to a projected 20 percent in 2020, adding up to over 447,000 Southern Nevadans struggling with hunger. That growth reflects the number of households in the state receiving benefits from SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services also reported that at the start of COVID-related shutdowns in March, it saw a 400 percent increase in applications from the previous year. 

In normal times, Three Square would have 200 volunteers operating between locations, however, due to the restrictions posed by the coronavirus, the number of volunteers shrunk while food insecurity soared throughout the region. To maintain momentum and rebuild its sturdy base of volunteers, Three Square is hosting drive-thru food distributions to accommodate social distancing. Volunteers are encouraged to help pack the groceries and load them into the trunk of each client's vehicle, keeping all participants as safe as possible. With the support of businesses and organizations across the region, like Lexicon Bank, Three Square is able to reach struggling individuals and families at risk of hunger and support its vision to create a hunger-free community.

Lexicon Bank’s partnership with Three Square Food Bank is a part of its Community Spotlight program, a monthly initiative that highlights local non-profit organizations that are making a difference in the Southern Nevada community. 

Lexicon Bank will pack groceries for Three Square clients at Dorothy Eisenberg Elementary School on Wednesday, November 18th from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. PT.
