November 2024 Community Spotlight

The Avery Burton Foundation (ABF) is focused on destigmatizing the conversation around mental health through outreach and educational resources for students and families. This is done in part with impactful storytelling via the ABF Resiliency Project and by providing Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) tips.

The goal of the ABF Resiliency Project is to ensure students have their voices heard and to inspire hope for others struggling with mental health issues. The Project debuted with original online content of local Southern Nevada high school senior student scholarship essays. These powerful and poignant stories reveal the adversity teens faced during a pandemic year filled with distance learning, isolation, missed sporting events, self-care tips, and more.

The Foundation, a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, is named after Avery Burton, a graduate of Foothill High School and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He took his life after a major depressive episode in 2017. In addition to the programs mentioned above, ABF provides annual scholarships to graduating high school students through the “Avery Burton Excellence in Academics and Sports” Scholarship.
